Scaling the Milk Stork Benefits Administration Platform

Designing a SaaS platform that enables employers and brokers to manage employee breast milk shipping benefits with clarity and efficiency.

Role

Lead Product Designer

  • Product UX strategy

  • Admin workflow design

  • Design system components

  • Dashboard and SaaS platform experience

  • Cross-functional collaboration with product and engineering

Problem

The existing portal supported essential tasks but had several usability challenges.

Employers and brokers needed to:

  • Manage employee benefit access

  • Configure benefit policies

  • Review plan details and eligibility

  • Monitor program activity

However, the experience lacked clarity and structure.

Key issues included:

  • Dense information layouts that were difficult to scan

  • Complex configuration flows

  • Inconsistent UI patterns across pages

  • Navigation that made key tasks harder to find

These issues slowed down onboarding and increased support requests.

Goals

✓ Improve clarity for benefit administrators

✓ Simplify configuration workflows

✓ Create consistent UI patterns across the platform

✓ Support multiple user roles such as employers and brokers

✓ Build scalable components for future features

Process

To understand the platform challenges, I reviewed existing workflows, collaborated with product and engineering teams, and identified areas where administrators experienced friction when managing benefits.

Solution

Clearer Dashboard Structure

I reorganized the dashboard into task-based modules so administrators can quickly access benefit management, policy settings, and program details.

Key actions such as managing benefits, reviewing plan details, and accessing program information are easier to find.

Simplified Benefit Setup

Benefit configuration was reorganized into clearer sections with structured form layouts.

This makes policies and settings easier to review and update.

Improved Page Layout

I introduced consistent spacing, headers, and content grouping to improve readability across admin pages.

This helps users quickly scan information and understand benefit details.

Reusable Design Patterns

I created reusable components for forms, admin tables, and navigation.

These patterns improved consistency across the platform and support future features.

Impact

✓ The updated experience improved how employers and brokers manage Milk Stork benefits.

✓ The redesign introduced clearer workflows, improved information hierarchy, and reusable design patterns that support platform scalability.

✓ The redesign improved usability for benefit administrators and established scalable design patterns that support future platform growth.
